Range

Tropical northern Africa and the Indian subcontinent; introduced widely

The rose-ringed parakeet, or ring-necked parakeet, is a medium-sized parrot with a disjunct native range in tropical northern Africa and the Indian subcontinent. Escaped pets have founded populations in many other parts of the world, including cities in northern and western Europe, where the birds can survive low winter temperatures. It is one of the few parrots that have adapted well to disturbed habitats and urbanisation (Wikipedia, general species account).

Four subspecies are recognised, two in Africa and two in Asia; genetic work suggests the African and Asian birds may be separate species. Asian birds are larger (Wikipedia, general species account).
