The western hooded pitta is a green bird with a black head and chestnut crown, 16 to 19 cm long and weighing 42–70 g. It was formerly considered conspecific with the Nicobar, Minahasa, eastern and Biak hooded pittas (Wikipedia, general species account).
It forages on the ground for insects and their larvae and also eats berries. The breeding period is February to August, when the strongly territorial pair build a nest on the ground, and both parents incubate the eggs and care for the fledglings (Wikipedia, general species account).
