The slaty-backed gull is a very large North Pacific gull with dark slate-grey wings, a broad white trailing edge and pink legs. It breeds on rocky coasts and islands and disperses south in winter. A powerful opportunist, it takes fish and marine invertebrates, raids seabird colonies for eggs and chicks, scavenges carrion and gathers around harbours and fishing vessels (Wikipedia, general species account).
