The pied avocet is an elegant black-and-white wader with very long blue-grey legs and a slender upcurved bill. It inhabits shallow saline and freshwater wetlands across Europe, Africa and Asia. Birds sweep the bill from side to side through water and soft mud to capture aquatic invertebrates, and also pick prey visually. Colonies nest on bare islands or shores and defend their young vigorously (Wikipedia, general species account). It is Nationally Least Concern (Thailand Red Data 2025).
