The black-naped oriole is a medium-sized, overall golden oriole with a strong pinkish bill and a broad black mask and nape. Unlike the Indian golden oriole, whose eye-stripe is short and narrow, its stripe broadens and joins at the back of the neck. The slender-billed oriole was once included as a subspecies. The usual call is a nasal niee or myaa, and the song a fluty iwee wee wee-leeow (Wikipedia, general species account).

It is found in many parts of Asia. The subspecies diffusus breeds in eastern Siberia, Ussuriland, north-eastern China, Korea, Japan and northern Vietnam and winters widely to the south. Two or three nests may be built by the female before one is chosen, often close to a black drongo's nest, and two or three eggs are laid (Wikipedia, general species account).
