The baya weaver is a weaverbird of the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, found in flocks in grasslands, cultivated areas, scrub and secondary growth. It is known for its hanging, retort-shaped nests woven from leaves, usually on thorny trees or palm fronds near or over water, where predators cannot easily reach. It is widespread and common and makes local seasonal movements in response to rain and food (Wikipedia, general species account).

Five subspecies are recognised. Linnaeus's species name philippina was based on a mistaken Philippines locality, later corrected to Sri Lanka (Wikipedia, general species account).
